RECOVERY GUIDE
Hernia Surgery Recovery: Week by Week
A practical week-by-week guide to what happens after robotic inguinal, ventral, or umbilical hernia repair with Dr. Kakarla.
Most patients are surprised by how manageable the recovery is after robotic hernia repair. You go home the same day, walk immediately, and manage pain with over-the-counter medication. Most desk workers return to work within 1–2 weeks. Full activity by 4–6 weeks.
Surgery Day (Day 0)
You arrive at the surgery center in the morning. The procedure takes 45–90 minutes. A TAP block (long-acting local anesthetic injected into the abdominal wall muscles) is performed during surgery for pain control. Incisions are closed with Dermabond (medical skin adhesive) — no stitches to remove. You go home a few hours later.
At home: Rest and light walking. Brief shower is fine (Dermabond is waterproof). Eat a light meal. Have your companion stay overnight.
Days 1–3: Early Recovery
Soreness increases as the TAP block wears off (usually day 1–2), then gradually improves. Most patients manage with scheduled acetaminophen and ibuprofen — a backup opioid prescription is provided but many patients never use it.
Normal: Bruising and swelling around incisions. Scrotal swelling in men (inguinal hernia). Mild constipation (milk of magnesia prescribed). Fatigue.
Do: Walk several times daily. Eat normally. Stay hydrated. Take stool softener.
Don’t: Lift more than 10 pounds. Strain. Soak incisions (brief shower only).
Week 1: Getting Comfortable
Pain decreases noticeably. Resume light household activities. Most patients are off prescription pain medication by day 3–5.
Driving: Permitted once you are off narcotic pain medication and can comfortably perform an emergency stop — typically day 5–7.
Groceries: After week 1, keep bags under 10 pounds.
Week 1–2: Follow-Up Visit
You see Dr. Kakarla in the office. He checks your incisions, reviews pathology if applicable, answers questions, and clears you for the next activity phase. Work paperwork (employer notes, FMLA) can be completed at this visit.
Weeks 2–4: Gradual Increase
Most desk workers return to work by week 2. Continue the 10-pound lifting restriction through week 4. Light walking and daily activity are encouraged. Sexual activity can resume when comfortable (typically 2–3 weeks). Dermabond sloughs off naturally (5–10 days).
After Week 4: Full Recovery
Gradually increase lifting and physical activity beyond 10 pounds. Most patients return to full exercise, heavy lifting, and sports over weeks 4–6. Some mild pulling or tightness at the repair site is normal and resolves. The mesh continues to integrate and strengthen for several months.
